China On A Mission To Build A Navy To Rival America’s

China’s Type 095 nuclear-powered attack submarine has been photographed at the Bohai Shipyard in Huludao, Liaoning Province — and the implications are massive. China now operates 9 SSNs (nuclear-powered attack submarines) and 32 nuclear-powered submarines in total, surpassing Russia’s 28 and closing the gap on the United States’ 71. This is a seismic shift in global naval power.

The Type 095 is estimated to be 110 metres long, 13 metres wide, and weighs around 9,000 tonnes — heavier than a WW2 aircraft carrier and larger than the Eiffel Tower’s steel structure. With parallel production lines reportedly running simultaneously, China’s submarine output is accelerating fast.

While the US still holds a commanding lead — aiming for 3 new submarines per year — China’s shipbuilding capacity is reportedly 200 times that of the United States in general terms. The technological gap between the two superpowers is narrowing. China’s Type 095 is now considered comparable to early Virginia-class submarines.

We break this down without the Western spin — what it means for US-China rivalry, Taiwan, Pacific dominance, and the future of undersea warfare.
